Created by the cooling and contracting of lava, these columns of basalt (most commonly hexagonal but sometimes pentagonal) most famously form geological structures such as the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

This column more likely came from the seam of Basalt running through the Eifel region of Germany. Mounted on a simple bronzed metal stand.

Naturally weathered.
