Provenance: Purchased by the previous owner from the Peterloo Gallery, 33A Brown Street, Manchester, 15 March 1973.
Polish by birth, Beutlich made Ditchling in Sussex his home. He was renowned as an innovative textile artist and motivational teacher, designing and making flat-weave tapestries and wall hangings inspired by folk art, nature and continental Modernism.
Beutlich attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, training in ceramics, stained glass, weaving and sculpture. After the Second World War he studied in Rome before moving to England for a painting and drawing scholarship. Inspired by imaginative weavers in Ditchling and Manchester, he changed direction to focus on weaving, which was to become his lifelong passion.
He took part in the third and fourth Lausanne biennales in the 1960s and his work was included in the British Artist Craftsmen touring exhibitions, which brought him an enthusiastic American audience. Beutlich was appointed MBE in 1993.
