A fine Arts & Crafts carved oak settle in the manner of Bruce Talbert (1838 - 1881)

The high back decorated with a grid of carved floral roundels bordered by naturalistic scrolling foliage. The plank seat flanked by heavily carved scrolling arms above a deep apron with a hidden frieze drawer, all faced with conforming carved foliate panels.
The grid of beautifully carved floral roundels is a feature that can also be found on some of Talbert's designs. For example, an oak sideboard designed by Talbert and made by Gillows & Co was illustrated in Examples of Ancient and Modern Furniture, London, 1876, Pl. 43 (see final image). On this sideboard, each cupboard door is faced with four similarly carved roundels in a grid formation. Although we don't believe our settle to be by Talbert, the influences are clear and the quality of manufacture certainly points to a high-end maker such as Gillows.
