A fine, small early Victorian tooled and gilt leather correspondence table cabinet
The top with a letter slot above two doors in tooled red and gilt leather with gothic motifs above a lower lockable drawer. The doors opening to reveal a fitted interior comprising a flap to access the letters with gilt and painted tooling, above pull-out compartments.
The inside of each door with an insert card: the left with days of the week to both sides, the right with a calendar to both sides with the months of 1844, marking significant British cultural dates, moon and sun phases, and Oxbridge term dates. These calendars were separate pieces of paper that were adhered to the card and could be removed and replaced annually. The lack of marks, tears or minor scratches around the paper on this card suggests that it was never replaced, and therefore most likely dates the cabinet itself to 1844.
England, circa 1844
